This blog was initiated in June 2011 by Howard W. Hallman, chair of Methodists United for Peace with Justice in the USA to foster public discussion about possibilities for European disarmament. To work out details he was joined by Susi Snyder, nuclear disarmament programme leader for IKV Pax Christi in The Netherlands, and Kevin Martin, executive director of Peace Action in the USA. We are reaching out to other organizations to become co-sponsors of this discussion.
We operate from a premise that the common security of all nations from the Atlantic to the Urals would be enhanced by elimination of all tactical nuclear weapons, reduction of conventional forces to a level that precludes offensive action, and further reductions of strategic nuclear weapons. The process should encompass the removal of U.S. and Canadian armed forces based in Europe as demobilization occurs in Russia. Disarmament should occur in a manner that is balanced, transparent, irreversible, and provides undiminished security for all during every stage.
Our intent is to involve many interested parties in Europe, North America, and elsewhere in this discussion.
